Pronunciation rules

  • つき (tsuki) is the kun-yomi when used alone or as a common noun.
  • ゲツ (getsu) is used when 月 is followed by other kanji: 月曜日 (げつようび), 今月 (こんげつ), 来月 (らいげつ).
  • ガツ (gatsu) is used when 月 comes AFTER numbers to form month names: 一月 (いちがつ), 二月 (にがつ), 三月 (さんがつ).
  • Rule: Number + 月 = がつ (gatsu). Other compounds = げつ (getsu).
